The UCSF Department of Surgery is comprised of approximately 86 full-time clinical faculty and 18 full-time research faculty (PhDs), Faculty in the Department of Surgery are pre-eminent regionally, nationally, and internationally. Many have served as officers of major surgical societies, members of specialty boards, and members of study sections at the NIH. New faculty are selected for clinical strengths, research potential, and teaching interest and aptitude. Faculty development is a high priority for the leadership of this Department.
Basic and clinical research by faculty and residents is fundamental to our mission. NIH grant funding of faculty research has increased annually for the past eight years. UCSF receives the second most NIH funding of all departments of surgery in the country at the present time. Funding from extramural sources (federal, industry, foundations, and gifts) grows steadily. We are optimistic that we can maintain, indeed increase, our research activity despite the external constraints that limit reimbursement for surgical services.
